Anson G. Henry (1804 – December 30, 1865) was an American physician and politician, best known for his close friendship with Abraham Lincoln.

Anson G. Henry was born in New Berlin, New York in 1804. He pursued a career in medicine and became a practicing physician.

Career[edit | edit source]

Henry moved to Springfield, Illinois, where he became a prominent figure in the community. He developed a close friendship with Abraham Lincoln, who was also residing in Springfield at the time. Their friendship lasted throughout Lincoln's life, and Henry often provided medical advice and support to Lincoln and his family.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Henry was an active member of the Republican Party and held various political positions. He was appointed as the Surveyor General of Washington by President Lincoln, a position he held from 1861 to 1865. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing land surveys in the Washington Territory.

Death[edit | edit source]

Anson G. Henry died on December 30, 1865, in a shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean while returning from a trip to the Washington Territory. His death was a significant loss to his friends and colleagues, including the recently assassinated President Lincoln.
