Aragónez (grape)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Aragónez is a type of grape that is primarily grown and used in the production of wine in Spain and Portugal. It is known by several other names, including Tinta Roriz in Portugal and Tempranillo in other regions of Spain.

History[edit | edit source]

The Aragónez grape is believed to have originated in the Iberian Peninsula, with historical records dating its cultivation back to the time of Phoenician settlements. It was likely spread by Carthaginians and Romans during their respective periods of rule.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Aragónez grapes are known for their thick skins, which contribute to the deep, rich color of the wines they produce. They are also characterized by their early ripening, which allows them to be harvested earlier in the season than many other grape varieties. The grapes have a high tannin content, which gives the wine a strong structure and the potential for long-term aging.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

In Spain, Aragónez is often blended with other grape varieties, such as Garnacha and Carignan, to produce wines with a balanced flavor profile. In Portugal, it is one of the key grape varieties used in the production of Port wine, a sweet, fortified wine that is one of the country's most famous exports.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Aragónez is a versatile grape that can be grown in a variety of soil types, though it thrives best in limestone-rich soils. It is a hardy vine that is resistant to many common vine diseases, though it is susceptible to pests such as the grape phylloxera.

Regions[edit | edit source]

While Aragónez is grown throughout Spain and Portugal, it is most commonly associated with the Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions in Spain, and the Douro Valley in Portugal.
