Area codes 718, 347, and 929

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Area codes 718, 347, and 929 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the boroughs of The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan in New York City. They are part of a larger system of area codes used across the United States, Canada, and certain Caribbean countries.

History[edit | edit source]

The 718 area code was introduced in 1984 as a split from 212, which was the original area code for all of New York City. The 718 area code originally served the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. In 1992, the 917 area code was introduced as an overlay to the entire city.

The 347 area code was added in October 1999 as an overlay to the 718 and 917 area codes in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. The 929 area code was added in 2011 as an additional overlay to the 718 and 347 area codes.

Geographic Coverage[edit | edit source]

The 718, 347, and 929 area codes cover the boroughs of The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan. This includes major neighborhoods such as Williamsburg, Astoria, Park Slope, and Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Dialing Procedures[edit | edit source]

In the areas served by the 718, 347, and 929 area codes, ten-digit dialing is mandatory, even for local calls within the same area code. This means that the area code must be dialed along with the seven-digit telephone number for all calls.
