Arsenic pentachloride is a chemical compound with the formula AsCl5. It is a yellowish liquid at room temperature and is known for being highly toxic and corrosive.

Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]

Arsenic pentachloride is composed of one arsenic atom and five chlorine atoms. It has a molar mass of 247.28 g/mol. The compound is known to decompose at its boiling point of 130 °C, releasing toxic gases.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

Arsenic pentachloride can be synthesized by the direct chlorination of arsenic trichloride (AsCl3) in the presence of excess chlorine gas. The reaction is as follows:

AsCl3 + Cl2 → AsCl5

Uses[edit | edit source]

Due to its high reactivity and toxicity, arsenic pentachloride is primarily used in research settings. It is not commonly used in industrial applications.

Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]
