Jamaican Olympic athlete and diplomat



Arthur Stanley Wint (25 May 1920 – 19 October 1992) was a Jamaican athlete and diplomat who was the first Jamaican to win an Olympic gold medal. He was known for his achievements in track and field, particularly in the 400 metres and 800 metres events, and later served as a diplomat for Jamaica.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Arthur Wint was born in Plowden, Manchester Parish, Jamaica. He attended Calabar High School and later Excelsior High School in Kingston. Wint showed early promise as an athlete, excelling in both track and field events during his school years.

Wint's athletic career reached its peak during the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. He won the gold medal in the 400 metres, becoming the first Jamaican to achieve this feat. In the same Olympics, he also won a silver medal in the 800 metres, finishing behind his compatriot Herb McKenley.

Wint continued his success at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, where he won another silver medal in the 800 metres and was part of the Jamaican 4 × 400 metres relay team that won the gold medal, setting a new world record in the process.

Commonwealth Games[edit | edit source]

In addition to his Olympic achievements, Wint also competed in the Commonwealth Games, where he won gold medals in the 440 yards and the 4 × 440 yards relay at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

After his athletic career, Wint pursued a career in medicine. He studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, where he qualified as a doctor. He later returned to Jamaica, where he worked as a medical officer in various hospitals and clinics.

Diplomatic career[edit | edit source]

In 1974, Wint was appointed as Jamaica's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, a position he held until 1978. During his tenure, he worked to strengthen the ties between Jamaica and the UK, promoting cultural and economic exchanges.
