Ashley Bloomfield

Ashley Bloomfield is a New Zealand public health physician and public servant. He has been serving as the Director-General of Health, the chief executive of the Ministry of Health, since June 2018. Bloomfield has been at the forefront of New Zealand's public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Bloomfield was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand. He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Auckland in 1990. He later received a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Otago, Wellington in 1998.

Career[edit | edit source]

Bloomfield began his career as a clinical doctor, before moving into public health roles. He has held a number of senior leadership positions within the New Zealand health sector, including as the Chief Executive at Capital and Coast District Health Board and acting Deputy Director-General in the Ministry of Health’s Policy Business Unit.

In June 2018, Bloomfield was appointed as the Director-General of Health, becoming the chief executive of the Ministry of Health. In this role, he has been responsible for the overall management and stewardship of the health and disability system in New Zealand.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bloomfield has been a key figure in New Zealand's response, providing regular updates and advice to the public. His leadership during this time has been widely praised both nationally and internationally.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Bloomfield is married and has three children. He is known for his interest in sports, particularly football, and is a supporter of the Wellington Phoenix football team.
