Aude is a department in the Occitanie region of France. It is named after the Aude River and is known for its rich history, diverse landscapes, and cultural heritage. The department is part of the historical region of Languedoc.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Aude is bordered by the departments of Hérault, Tarn, Haute-Garonne, Ariège, and Pyrénées-Orientales, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the east. The department features a variety of landscapes, including coastal plains, rolling hills, and mountainous areas. The Corbières Massif and the Montagne Noire are notable geographical features.

The history of Aude dates back to ancient times, with evidence of human settlement in the region during the Neolithic period. The area was later inhabited by the Gauls and became part of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, Aude was a center of the Cathar movement, which led to the Albigensian Crusade.
