Early Life[edit | edit source]

Augustus Siebe was born in Saxony, Germany in 1788. He moved to England in 1816 after serving in the Prussian army during the Napoleonic Wars. In England, he established a business as a mechanic and instrument maker.

Siebe's most significant contribution was the invention of the closed diving helmet, which he developed in 1837. This invention revolutionized underwater exploration and work, and is considered the precursor to modern diving suits. The Siebe Gorman Company, which he founded, continued to innovate and develop diving and breathing apparatuses long after his death.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Augustus Siebe's inventions have had a profound impact on underwater exploration, salvage operations, and deep-sea construction. His closed diving helmet, in particular, has been recognized as a significant milestone in the history of diving. The Siebe Gorman Company, which he founded, continued to be a leading manufacturer of diving equipment until the late 20th century.
