Historical ethnic group in the Caucasus

The Avars are a historical ethnic group native to the Caucasus region, primarily found in Dagestan, a republic of Russia. They are one of the largest ethnic groups in Dagestan and have a rich cultural and historical heritage.

History[edit | edit source]

The Avars have a long and complex history that dates back to ancient times. They are believed to be descendants of the ancient Caucasian Avars, who were known for their warrior culture and played a significant role in the region's history. The Avars were part of the Khazar Khaganate and later the Golden Horde.

During the Middle Ages, the Avars established the Avar Khanate, which became a significant political entity in the Caucasus. The khanate played a crucial role in the resistance against the Russian Empire during the Caucasian War in the 19th century.

Language[edit | edit source]

The Avars speak the Avar language, which belongs to the Northeast Caucasian language family. The language has several dialects and is written using the Cyrillic script.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Avar culture is rich and diverse, with a strong emphasis on traditional customs and practices. The Avars are known for their folk music, dance, and oral literature. Traditional Avar music often features the use of instruments such as the chonguri and the doli.

Religion[edit | edit source]

The majority of Avars are adherents of Sunni Islam, which has been the dominant religion among them since the 8th century. The spread of Islam among the Avars was facilitated by the influence of neighboring Islamic states and the efforts of local religious leaders.

Notable Avars[edit | edit source]

  • Imam Shamil - A prominent leader of the Avar resistance against the Russian Empire during the Caucasian War.
  • Rasul Gamzatov - A famous Avar poet and writer.
