Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) is a significant pathogen in the poultry industry, affecting both turkeys and chickens. It is a member of the genus Metapneumovirus within the family Paramyxoviridae. This virus is responsible for causing respiratory disease in birds, leading to economic losses due to decreased productivity and increased mortality.

Avian metapneumovirus is an enveloped, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. It is classified into four subtypes: A, B, C, and D, based on genetic and antigenic differences. Diagnosis of avian metapneumovirus infection is based on clinical signs, serological tests, and molecular techniques such as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Isolation of the virus in embryonated chicken eggs or cell culture can also be performed for confirmation.
