Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) is a significant pathogen in the poultry industry, affecting both turkeys and chickens. It is a member of the genus Metapneumovirus within the family Paramyxoviridae. This virus is responsible for causing respiratory disease in birds, leading to economic losses due to decreased productivity and increased mortality.

Avian metapneumovirus is an enveloped, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. It is classified into four subtypes: A, B, C, and D, based on genetic and antigenic differences. The virus primarily targets the respiratory tract of birds, leading to symptoms such as coughing, nasal discharge, and conjunctivitis.

Transmission[edit | edit source]

The virus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly among flocks through direct contact with infected birds or through aerosolized droplets. It can also be transmitted via contaminated equipment, feed, and water. Biosecurity measures are crucial in preventing the spread of aMPV in poultry farms.

Infected birds typically exhibit respiratory distress, including coughing, sneezing, and nasal discharge. In turkeys, the disease is often referred to as "turkey rhinotracheitis." In chickens, it can lead to swollen head syndrome, characterized by swelling around the eyes and head. Secondary bacterial infections can exacerbate the condition, leading to increased morbidity and mortality.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of avian metapneumovirus infection is based on clinical signs, serological tests, and molecular techniques such as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Isolation of the virus in embryonated chicken eggs or cell culture can also be performed for confirmation.

Vaccination is the primary method of controlling aMPV in poultry. Both live attenuated and inactivated vaccines are available and are used depending on the subtype and local regulations. Good management practices, including biosecurity measures, are essential to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus.
