Béla Bicsérdy (March 22, 1872 – December 7, 1951) was a Hungarian author, lecturer, and naturopath who was a prominent advocate of vegetarianism and natural hygiene. He is often referred to as the "Hungarian Apostle of Raw Food" due to his promotion of a diet consisting primarily of raw fruits and vegetables.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Bicsérdy was born in Marosvásárhely, which was part of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. He pursued studies in various fields, including philosophy, medicine, and natural sciences. His interest in health and nutrition led him to explore alternative dietary practices.

Career and Philosophy[edit | edit source]

Bicsérdy's career as a health reformer began in the early 20th century. He wrote several books and gave numerous lectures on the benefits of a raw food diet and natural living. His teachings emphasized the importance of consuming raw, unprocessed foods to maintain health and prevent disease. Bicsérdy believed that a diet rich in raw fruits and vegetables could lead to physical and mental rejuvenation.

He was also a proponent of fasting and detoxification, advocating for periodic fasting as a means to cleanse the body of toxins. Bicsérdy's ideas were influenced by the natural hygiene movement, which promotes living in harmony with the natural laws of health.

Publications[edit | edit source]

  • A Növények Élete (The Life of Plants)
  • A Természetes Életmód (The Natural Lifestyle)
  • A Nyers Ételek Életmódja (The Raw Food Lifestyle)

These publications contributed significantly to the spread of vegetarian and raw food movements in Hungary and other parts of Europe.
