B*83 is a HLA-B serotype. The HLA-B*83 serotype is a rare B serotype. This serotype is a split antigen of the broad antigen HLA-B35.

Function[edit | edit source]

HLA-B belongs to the HLA class I heavy chain paralogues. This class I molecule is a heterodimer consisting of a heavy chain and a light chain (beta-2 microglobulin). The heavy chain is anchored in the membrane. Class I molecules play a central role in the immune system by presenting peptides derived from the endoplasmic reticulum lumen. They are expressed in nearly all cells.

Disease Associations[edit | edit source]

HLA-B*83 has been associated with a number of diseases, including HIV and autoimmune diseases.

Distribution[edit | edit source]

HLA-B*83 is most commonly found in populations in West Africa, but it is also present in other populations around the world.
