BIS Records
BIS Records is a record label based in Sweden that specializes in classical music. Founded in 1973 by Robert von Bahr, the label has gained international recognition for its commitment to sound quality and the breadth of its catalog.
History[edit | edit source]
Robert von Bahr established BIS Records in 1973 with the aim of creating a platform for Swedish artists to reach a global audience. The label's first release was a recording of music by the Swedish composer Lars-Erik Larsson. Since then, BIS Records has expanded its catalog to include a wide range of classical music, from early music to contemporary works.
Philosophy[edit | edit source]
BIS Records is known for its commitment to high-quality sound. The label was one of the first to adopt the Super Audio CD (SACD) format, which offers superior audio quality compared to traditional CDs. BIS Records also avoids the use of compression in its recordings, a practice that can reduce sound quality but is common in the music industry.
Catalog[edit | edit source]
The BIS Records catalog is diverse, featuring music from a wide range of periods and styles. The label has released recordings of works by well-known composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, as well as contemporary composers like Kaija Saariaho and Magnus Lindberg. BIS Records has also championed lesser-known composers and works, contributing to the discovery and appreciation of new music.
Artists[edit | edit source]
BIS Records has worked with many renowned artists, including conductor Osmo Vänskä, pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. The label's commitment to promoting Swedish music and artists remains strong, with many Swedish musicians featured in its catalog.
Recognition[edit | edit source]
BIS Records has received numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. These include the Gramophone Award and the Diapason d'Or, two of the most prestigious awards in the classical music industry.
