BMP10[edit | edit source]

BMP10 or Bone Morphogenetic Protein 10 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BMP10 gene. It is a member of the Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs) family, which is part of the Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-beta) superfamily. The superfamily includes large families of growth and differentiation factors.

Function[edit | edit source]

BMP10 is a potent inducer of cardiac growth and is essential for maintaining cardiomyocyte proliferation. It is expressed in the developing heart and is required for the formation of the right ventricle and outflow tract. BMP10 also plays a crucial role in the regulation of angiogenesis, the process through which new blood vessels form from pre-existing vessels.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the BMP10 gene have been associated with various heart diseases, including congenital heart disease and heart failure. BMP10 is also implicated in certain types of cancer, as it can promote tumor growth and metastasis by enhancing angiogenesis.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research on BMP10 is ongoing, with studies focusing on its role in heart development and disease, as well as its potential as a therapeutic target for heart failure and cancer.
