Backdraft (drink)
Backdraft (drink)
The Backdraft is a popular flaming cocktail that originated in the late 20th century. It is known for its unique preparation method and the interactive experience it provides to the drinker. The Backdraft is typically served in a snifter and includes a combination of Cognac and Grand Marnier, a French brand of liqueur.
History[edit | edit source]
The exact origins of the Backdraft cocktail are unclear, but it is believed to have been created in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The name "Backdraft" is thought to be inspired by the 1991 film of the same name, which revolves around firefighters and features several intense fire scenes. The cocktail's preparation and consumption method, which involves setting the drink on fire and inhaling the fumes, is reminiscent of a backdraft fire phenomenon.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
To prepare a Backdraft, the bartender first pours equal parts of Cognac and Grand Marnier into a snifter. The drink is then set on fire, and a coaster or similar flat object is placed over the top of the glass to extinguish the flame. This creates a vacuum inside the glass, causing the alcoholic vapors to be sucked back into the liquid. The drinker then removes the coaster, inhales the vapors, and finally drinks the cocktail.
Consumption[edit | edit source]
The consumption of a Backdraft is a unique experience. The drinker is not only consuming the drink but also inhaling the alcoholic vapors, which can intensify the effects of the alcohol. This method of consumption is not recommended for inexperienced drinkers or those with respiratory issues.
Variations[edit | edit source]
There are several variations of the Backdraft cocktail. Some bartenders may use different types of Cognac or liqueur, or add additional ingredients such as cinnamon or cream. However, the flaming preparation method and the inhalation of vapors remain consistent across all variations.
