Baldwin City was founded in 1858. It was named after John Baldwin, a native of Ohio, who had moved to Kansas and built a sawmill in the area. The city is home to Baker University, the oldest four-year university in the state, which was established in 1858.

Baldwin City is located at 38°46′39″N 95°11′15″W. The city has a total area of 2.64 square miles, all of it land.
