Ballard

Ballard is a neighborhood located in the northwestern part of Seattle, Washington. It is known for its rich Scandinavian heritage, which is celebrated annually during the Syttende Mai parade. Ballard is also home to the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the most heavily used locks in the U.S.

Ballard was incorporated as a city in 1890 and was annexed by Seattle in 1907. The neighborhood's early economy was dominated by the shingle industry, and it was once known as the "Shingle Capital of the World". The area's Scandinavian influence began with the arrival of Norwegian and Swedish immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Ballard is bounded by Crown Hill to the north, Phinney Ridge and Greenwood to the east, and the Lake Washington Ship Canal to the south and west. The neighborhood's main thoroughfares are Market Street and Ballard Avenue.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Ballard is known for its vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. The neighborhood is also home to the Nordic Museum, which celebrates the culture and history of the Nordic countries.

Education[edit | edit source]

Ballard is served by the Seattle Public Schools district. The main high school in the area is Ballard High School.
