Barbajada
Barbajada is a traditional Milanese beverage that dates back to the 19th century. It is a frothy drink made from a mixture of coffee, chocolate, milk, and sugar. The drink is typically served hot, although it can also be enjoyed cold.
History[edit | edit source]
The Barbajada was created by Domenico Barbaja, a famous Italian impresario and coffeehouse owner in Milan. Barbaja was known for his innovative spirit and contributions to the cultural life of Milan, particularly in the realm of opera. The drink quickly became popular in Milanese coffeehouses and was enjoyed by many, including notable figures in the arts and society.

The preparation of Barbajada involves mixing equal parts of strong coffee and hot chocolate, then adding an equal amount of steamed milk. The mixture is sweetened with sugar to taste and whisked until frothy. The drink is traditionally served in a large cup or mug, often accompanied by a small pastry or biscuit.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
Barbajada holds a special place in Milanese culture and is considered a symbol of the city's rich culinary heritage. It is often associated with the elegant coffeehouses of Milan, where intellectuals, artists, and socialites would gather to discuss ideas and enjoy the sophisticated atmosphere.
