List of Coffee Beverages

Coffee is a popular beverage consumed worldwide. It is prepared from roasted coffee beans, the seeds of berries from certain Coffea species. There are numerous ways to brew and serve coffee, resulting in a wide variety of coffee beverages. This article provides a comprehensive list of coffee beverages.

Espresso[edit | edit source]

Espresso is a type of coffee beverage that is brewed by forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water under pressure through finely ground coffee beans. It is thicker than coffee brewed by other methods, has a higher concentration of suspended and dissolved solids, and has crema on top.

Americano[edit | edit source]

An Americano is a style of coffee prepared by adding hot water to espresso, giving it a similar strength to, but different flavor from, regular drip coffee.

Cappuccino[edit | edit source]

Cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink traditionally prepared with double espresso, and steamed milk foam. Variations of the drink involve the use of cream instead of milk, and flavoring with cinnamon or chocolate powder.

Latte[edit | edit source]

A Latte is a coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk. The term as used in English is a shortened form of the Italian caffè latte, which means milk coffee.

Mocha[edit | edit source]

A Mocha is a chocolate-flavored variant of a latte. It is typically made of espresso, hot milk, and chocolate, usually in the form of sweet cocoa powder, although many varieties use chocolate syrup.

Macchiato[edit | edit source]

Macchiato is an espresso coffee drink with a small amount of milk, usually foamed. In Italian, macchiato means "stained" or "spotted" so the literal translation of caffè macchiato is "stained coffee", or coffee with a spot of milk.

Affogato[edit | edit source]

An Affogato is a coffee-based dessert. It usually takes the form of a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream topped or "drowned" with a shot of hot espresso.

Flat White[edit | edit source]

A Flat White is a coffee drink consisting of espresso with microfoam (steamed milk with small, fine bubbles with a glossy or velvety consistency). It is comparable to a latte, but smaller in volume and with less microfoam.

Ristretto[edit | edit source]

Ristretto is traditionally a short shot of espresso coffee made with the normal amount of ground coffee but extracted with about half the amount of water. Because of its concentration, ristretto is considered to be more flavorful and less bitter than other espresso shots.

Irish Coffee[edit | edit source]

Irish Coffee is a cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar, stirred, and topped with cream. The coffee is drunk through the cream.

Vienna Coffee[edit | edit source]

Vienna Coffee is a popular traditional cream-based coffee beverage. It is made by preparing two shots of strong black espresso in a standard sized coffee cup and infusing the coffee with whipped cream until the cup is full.

Doppio[edit | edit source]

A Doppio is a double shot of espresso. It is served in a demitasse cup, which is larger than a single shot of espresso.

Cortado[edit | edit source]

A Cortado is a Spanish-origin general term for a beverage consisting of espresso mixed with a roughly equal amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity.

Breve[edit | edit source]

A Breve is an American variation of a latte: a milk-based espresso drink using half-and-half instead of milk.

Black Eye[edit | edit source]

A Black Eye is a beverage that combines drip coffee with a double shot of espresso.

Red Eye[edit | edit source]

A Red Eye is a drink that consists of brewed coffee topped off with a shot of espresso.

Galão[edit | edit source]

A Galão is a hot drink from Portugal made of espresso and foamed milk. It is similar to a caffè latte or a cappuccino but with more milk.

Lungo[edit | edit source]

A Lungo is a coffee beverage made by using an espresso machine to make an Italian-style coffee – short black (single or double dose or shot) with much more water (generally twice as much), resulting in a larger coffee, a lungo.

Café au lait[edit | edit source]

Café au lait is a French coffee drink. In the French-speaking world, café au lait stems from the same continental tradition as caffè latte in Italy, café con leche in Spain, kawa biała ("white coffee") in Poland, Milchkaffee in Germany, tejeskávé in Hungary, and café com leite in Portugal and Brazil.

Café Bombón[edit | edit source]

Café Bombón was made popular in Valencia, Spain, and spread gradually to the rest of the country. It might have been re-created and modified to suit European tastebuds as in many parts of Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore the same recipe for coffee which is called "Kopi Susu Panas" (Malaysia) or "Gafeh Rorn" [lit: hot coffee] (Thailand) has already been around for decades and is very popular in "mamak" stalls and "kopitiams" in Malaysia.

Café Cubano[edit | edit source]

Café Cubano (also known as Cuban espresso, Cuban coffee, cafecito, Cuban pull, and Cuban shot) is a type of espresso that originated in Cuba. Specifically, it refers to an espresso shot which is sweetened (traditionally with natural brown sugar which has been whipped with the first and strongest drops of espresso).

Café de olla[edit | edit source]

Café de olla is a traditional Mexican coffee beverage. To prepare café de olla, it is essential to use a traditional earthen clay pot, as this gives a special flavor to the coffee.

Café con leche[edit | edit source]

Café con leche is a Spanish coffee beverage. It is similar to the Italian caffè latte and the French café au lait.

Café Touba[edit | edit source]

Café Touba is a coffee beverage that is a popular traditional drink of Senegal. Café Touba is named after Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké, the founder of the city of Touba, Senegal.

Café Zorro[edit | edit source]

Café Zorro is a double espresso (doppio) added to hot water with a 1:1 ratio.

Caffè Crema[edit | edit source]

Caffè Crema (Italian: cream coffee) refers to two different coffee drinks: an old name for espresso (1940s and 1950s), and a long espresso drink primarily served in Switzerland and Austria and northern Italy (1980s onwards), along the Italian/ Swiss and Italian/ Austrian border.

Caffè Marocchino[edit | edit source]

Caffè Marocchino is a coffee drink created in Alessandria, Italy. It is served in a small glass and consists of a shot of espresso, cocoa powder and milk froth.

Caffè Medici[edit | edit source]

Caffè Medici is a doppio poured over chocolate syrup and orange peel, usually topped with whipped cream. The drink originated at Seattle's historic Last Exit on Brooklyn coffeehouse.

Caffè Miel[edit | edit source]

Caffè Miel has a shot of espresso, steamed milk, cinnamon, and honey. Miel is honey in Spanish.

Caffè Tobio[edit | edit source]

Caffè Tobio is an espresso drink with an equal amount of regular coffee. It is also known as a "half and half."

Guillermo[edit | edit source]

A Guillermo was originally made with one or two shots of hot espresso, poured over slices of lime. It can also be served on ice, sometimes with a touch of milk.

Kopi susu[edit | edit source]

Kopi susu is found in (at least) Malaysia, Borneo and Indonesia and very similar to the preceding entry for Ca phe sua nong. Literally, kopi susu means "milk coffee". Served in a glass, kopi susu can be made simply by mixing black coffee (arabica) with about a quarter to half a glass of sweetened condensed milk then let stand to cool and allow the grounds to sink to the bottom. This is not to be confused with Kopi Tubruk.

Latte macchiato[edit | edit source]

Latte macchiato is a coffee beverage; the name literally means stained milk. This refers to the method of preparation, wherein the milk gets "stained" by the addition of espresso.

Pocillo[edit | edit source]

A Pocillo size coffee is usually half the size of the usual ~8 US fluid ounces (240 ml) coffee cup. Sometimes, to accommodate the small size, a higher concentration of coffee beans to water is used, compared to the norm of 1:20.

Ristretto[edit | edit source]

Ristretto is traditionally a short shot of espresso coffee made with the normal amount of ground coffee but extracted with about half the amount of water in the same amount of time by using a finer grind. This produces a concentrated shot of coffee per volume. Just pulling a shot short will produce a weaker shot and is not a ristretto as some believe.

Wiener Melange[edit | edit source]

Wiener Melange is a speciality coffee drink similar to a cappuccino. The difference is sometimes assumed to be that the melange is made with milder coffee but the Viennese coffee company Julius Meinl describes a Wiener melange as "One small espresso served in a large cup of coffee. Steam milk and add milk foam to coffee (=small milk coffee)."

Yuanyang[edit | edit source]

Yuanyang, sometimes also called Ying Yong, is a popular beverage in Hong Kong. Made of a mixture of coffee and Hong Kong-style milk tea, it is served hot or cold. Yuanyang means pair of two unlike items as used in this drink. This is a non-exhaustive food and drink related list.
