Bayannur (Chinese: 巴彦淖尔市; pinyin: Bāyànnào'ěr Shì ) is a prefecture-level city in western Inner Mongolia, China. It is located in the western part of the autonomous region, bordering Mongolia to the north. The city is known for its rich agricultural land and is a significant producer of sunflower seeds, tomatoes, and other crops.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Bayannur is situated in the Hetao Plain, which is part of the larger Ordos Plateau. The Yellow River flows through the region, providing essential water resources for agriculture. The city has a semi-arid climate, with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers.
History[edit | edit source]
The area of Bayannur has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. During the Han dynasty, the region was part of the frontier defense system against the Xiongnu. In more recent history, Bayannur became a significant agricultural center during the People's Republic of China era, with the development of irrigation systems and state farms.

Bayannur's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with a focus on cash crops such as sunflower seeds, tomatoes, and sugar beets. The city is also developing its industrial sector, with food processing and manufacturing playing an increasingly important role. The Bayannur Economic and Technological Development Zone is a key area for industrial growth.

As of the 2020 census, Bayannur has a population of approximately 1.67 million people. The population is ethnically diverse, with a majority of Han Chinese and significant numbers of Mongols, Hui, and other ethnic groups.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Bayannur is well-connected by road and rail. The Baotou-Lanzhou Railway passes through the city, providing access to major cities in China. The Bayannur Tianjitai Airport offers flights to several domestic destinations.

Bayannur has several institutions of higher education, including Bayannur Vocational College, which offers programs in agriculture, engineering, and business.
