Belhaven Brewery
Belhaven Brewery is a historic brewery located in Dunbar, Scotland. Established in 1719, it is one of the oldest surviving breweries in Scotland and is renowned for its traditional Scottish ales.
History[edit | edit source]
Belhaven Brewery was founded in 1719 by a local maltster named John Johnstone. The brewery has been producing beer for over 300 years, making it one of the oldest breweries in the United Kingdom. The name "Belhaven" is derived from the Gaelic "Baile na h-Abhann," meaning "village by the river."
Products[edit | edit source]
Belhaven Brewery is best known for its range of traditional Scottish ales. Some of its most popular products include:
- Belhaven Best - A smooth, creamy Scottish ale with a malty flavor.
- Belhaven Black - A rich, dark stout with notes of coffee and chocolate.
- Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA - A hoppy India Pale Ale with a citrusy aroma.
- Belhaven Scottish Ale - A classic Scottish ale with a balanced malt profile.
Brewing Process[edit | edit source]
Belhaven Brewery uses traditional brewing methods combined with modern technology to produce its beers. The brewery sources its water from a natural spring located on the brewery grounds. The malt used in the brewing process is sourced from local Scottish barley, and the hops are carefully selected to complement the malt flavors.
Ownership[edit | edit source]
In 2005, Belhaven Brewery was acquired by Greene King, a large British brewing company. Despite the acquisition, Belhaven has maintained its traditional brewing methods and continues to produce its signature Scottish ales.
Visitor Experience[edit | edit source]
Belhaven Brewery offers guided tours of its facilities, allowing visitors to learn about the brewing process and the history of the brewery. The tours typically include a tasting session where visitors can sample a variety of Belhaven's beers.
