Bengay

Bengay, also known as Ben-Gay, is a topical analgesic product used to relieve muscle and joint pain. It is produced by Johnson & Johnson and has been available since 1898. The product is named after its original creator, Dr. Jules Bengué.

Composition

Bengay contains three active ingredients: Methyl Salicylate, Menthol, and Camphor. These ingredients work together to provide pain relief. Methyl Salicylate and Menthol are counterirritants, which work by causing the skin to feel cool and then warm. These sensations distract the brain from the pain. Camphor stimulates nerve endings that relieve symptoms of pain and inflammation.

Uses

Bengay is primarily used to alleviate pain associated with muscle strain, arthritis, backache, and joint pain. It is applied topically to the skin over the area where pain is felt. The product is intended for external use only and should not be used on wounds or damaged skin, or in or near the eyes.

Side Effects

While Bengay is generally safe for use, it can cause side effects in some individuals. These may include skin irritation, redness, or a burning sensation at the application site.
