Benzo(a)fluoranthene
Benzo(a)fluoranthene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is classified as a carcinogen. It is one of the many byproducts produced during the incomplete combustion of organic materials, such as coal, oil, gas, wood, and tobacco.
Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]
Benzo(a)fluoranthene is composed of five fused benzene rings, forming a flat, aromatic system. Its molecular formula is C20H12, and it has a molar mass of 252.31 g/mol. The structure of benzo(a)fluoranthene is characterized by a bay region, a region where two aromatic rings share a side.
Sources and Exposure[edit | edit source]
Benzo(a)fluoranthene is primarily released into the environment through the combustion of organic materials. It is commonly found in tobacco smoke, vehicle exhaust, and industrial emissions. It can also be found in grilled or smoked foods, and in some cases, contaminated drinking water.
Humans can be exposed to benzo(a)fluoranthene through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. Occupational exposure is most common among workers in industries that involve the burning of organic materials.
Health Effects[edit | edit source]
As a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, benzo(a)fluoranthene is a known carcinogen. It has been linked to lung and skin cancers in humans. Other health effects include respiratory problems, skin irritation, and potential damage to the immune system.
Regulation and Guidelines[edit | edit source]
Due to its carcinogenic properties, several regulatory bodies have set guidelines for benzo(a)fluoranthene exposure. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have both established maximum allowable concentrations for benzo(a)fluoranthene in drinking water.
