Berkshire is a county located in the South East of England, to the west of London. It is often referred to as the Royal County of Berkshire because of the presence of Windsor Castle, a residence of the British monarch. The county town is Reading, which is a major commercial and educational hub.

History

The history of Berkshire dates back to the 9th century when it was established as one of the historic counties of England. It played a significant role throughout English history, being a site for several battles, including the Battle of Reading during the Viking invasions. The county's proximity to London and the royal residence of Windsor Castle has also made it an important area throughout the centuries.

Berkshire has been the birthplace or residence of several notable individuals, including the Duchess of Cambridge, who was born in Reading, and the poet Alexander Pope, who lived in Binfield.
