Bernard Ribeiro, Baron Ribeiro
Bernard Francisco Ribeiro, Baron Ribeiro (born 20 January 1944) is a British surgeon and politician. He is a former President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was made a life peer in 2010.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Bernard Ribeiro was born in Achimota, Ghana. He attended the Achimota School before moving to the United Kingdom to further his education. He studied medicine at Middlesex Hospital Medical School, graduating in 1967.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Ribeiro began his medical career as a house surgeon at Middlesex Hospital. He later specialized in general surgery and became a consultant surgeon at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 1979. He was known for his work in colorectal surgery and contributed significantly to the development of laparoscopic surgery techniques.
Royal College of Surgeons of England[edit | edit source]
In 2005, Ribeiro was elected President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a position he held until 2008. During his tenure, he focused on improving surgical training and patient safety. He also advocated for the modernization of surgical practices and the adoption of new technologies.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
In 2010, Ribeiro was made a life peer as Baron Ribeiro, of Achimota in the Republic of Ghana and of Ovington in the County of Hampshire. He sits in the House of Lords as a Conservative and has been active in debates on health and medical issues.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Ribeiro is married and has two children. He is also involved in various charitable activities and has been a strong advocate for improving healthcare in Africa.
