Berne (also known as Bern) is the de facto capital of Switzerland. It is the fourth most populous city in Switzerland and is located in the Swiss Plateau region. The city is known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and vibrant culture.

Berne was founded in 1191 by Duke Berthold V of Zähringen and was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It became a Free imperial city in 1218 after the extinction of the Zähringen line. Berne joined the Swiss Confederacy in 1353 and has been the federal capital of Switzerland since 1848.
