Bibb County is a county located in the central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 157,346. The county seat is Macon, which is also the largest city in the county. Bibb County is part of the Macon, Georgia metropolitan area.

Bibb County was created on December 9, 1822, from portions of Jones, Monroe, Twiggs, and Houston counties. It was named after Dr. William Wyatt Bibb, a physician and the first elected governor of the state of Alabama.

The county has a rich history, with Macon serving as a significant cultural and economic hub in the region. During the American Civil War, Macon was a Confederate arsenal and supply depot.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 255 square miles (660 km²), of which 250 square miles (650 km²) is land and 5.0 square miles (13 km²) (2.0%) is water.

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 157,346 people, 60,295 households, and 37,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 629 people per square mile (243/km²).

The racial makeup of the county was 54.1% African American, 39.1% White, 1.6% Asian, 0.3% Native American, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.4% of the population.

Bibb County's economy is diverse, with significant contributions from healthcare, education, manufacturing, and retail sectors. The presence of Mercer University and other educational institutions also plays a vital role in the local economy.

Bibb County is served by the Bibb County School District, which operates numerous elementary, middle, and high schools. Higher education institutions include Mercer University, Middle Georgia State University, and Central Georgia Technical College.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Bibb County is well-connected by several major highways, including Interstate 75, Interstate 16, and U.S. Route 41. The Macon Downtown Airport and Middle Georgia Regional Airport provide air services to the region.
