The Big East Conference is a collegiate athletic conference that competes in the NCAA Division I. The conference is known for its strong basketball programs and has a rich history of athletic competition.

The Big East Conference was founded in 1979 by Dave Gavitt, who was the athletic director at Providence College at the time. The original members included Boston College, Connecticut, Georgetown, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, and Syracuse. The conference was established primarily to create a strong basketball league in the northeastern United States.
Expansion and Realignment[edit | edit source]
Over the years, the Big East Conference underwent several expansions and realignments. In the 1980s and 1990s, the conference added several new members, including Villanova, Pittsburgh, Miami, and Rutgers.
In 2013, the conference underwent a major realignment. The "Catholic 7" schools (DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's, and Villanova) left the original Big East to form a new conference, retaining the Big East name. They were joined by Butler, Creighton, and Xavier.
