Bikini Incision

A bikini incision is a type of surgical incision that is commonly used in gynecological procedures and cesarean sections. The incision is so named because it is typically made in the lower abdomen, along the line of a bikini bottom, hence the term "bikini" incision.

Description[edit | edit source]

The bikini incision is a type of Pfannenstiel incision, which is a horizontal incision made in the lower abdomen, just above the pubic bone. The incision is usually about 10-20 centimeters in length, and is made in the skin, fat, and fascia of the lower abdomen. The underlying muscles are not cut, but are instead separated along their fibers to gain access to the abdominal cavity.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The bikini incision is most commonly used in gynecological surgeries, such as hysterectomies and cesarean sections. It is also used in some types of urological surgeries, such as bladder suspension procedures. The incision is favored for these types of surgeries because it allows for good access to the pelvic organs, while resulting in a scar that is hidden by most types of underwear and swimwear.

Advantages and Disadvantages[edit | edit source]

The main advantage of the bikini incision is its cosmetic appeal. Because the incision is made along the bikini line, the resulting scar is usually well hidden and is therefore less noticeable than scars from other types of incisions.

However, the bikini incision also has some disadvantages. Because the incision is made in the lower abdomen, it can be more painful than other types of incisions. In addition, the bikini incision may not provide as much access to the abdominal cavity as other types of incisions, such as a midline incision.

Recovery[edit | edit source]

Recovery from a bikini incision depends on the specific procedure that was performed. However, in general, patients can expect to spend several days in the hospital following surgery. Full recovery can take several weeks to several months, depending on the individual patient and the specific procedure.
