BioMedical Admissions Test

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) is a subject-specific admissions test taken by applicants to certain medicine, biomedicine, dentistry and veterinary science courses at universities. The BMAT is owned and administered by Cambridge Assessment, a not-for-profit department of the University of Cambridge.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The BioMedical Admissions Test is a two-hour, pen-and-paper test divided into three sections. It is used by universities in the United Kingdom, Spain, Malaysia, Thailand, Hungary, and the Netherlands for entry into a range of health sciences degree programmes.

Test Format[edit | edit source]

The BMAT is divided into three sections:

  1. Aptitude and Skills: This section is designed to test generic skills in problem-solving, understanding arguments, and data analysis and inference.
  2. Scientific Knowledge and Applications: This section tests the ability to apply scientific knowledge typically covered in school science and mathematics by the age of 16 (in the UK, GCSE level).
  3. Writing Task: In this section, candidates need to write a short essay.

Scoring[edit | edit source]

BMAT scores are used in a variety of ways by different institutions – from being a factor considered in the final decision, to being used as a cut-off score. Each section of the BMAT is scored separately and then combined to give an overall score.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

Preparation for the BMAT requires a good understanding of science and mathematics concepts, as well as strong problem-solving skills and essay writing abilities. There are many resources available, including past papers, textbooks, and online courses.
