Biological Magnetic Resonance Data Bank
Biological Magnetic Resonance Data Bank (BMRB)
The Biological Magnetic Resonance Data Bank (BMRB) is a repository for data derived from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy on proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules. The BMRB collects, annotates, archives, and disseminates NMR spectroscopic data derived from both solution and solid-state NMR studies.
History[edit | edit source]
The BMRB was established in 1988 as a resource for the NMR community to store and share data. It is part of the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics (RCSB) and collaborates closely with the Protein Data Bank (PDB) to provide comprehensive structural and functional information about biological macromolecules.
Data Content[edit | edit source]
The BMRB contains a variety of data types, including:
- Chemical shifts
- Coupling constants
- Relaxation rates
- NOE (Nuclear Overhauser Effect) data
- Residual dipolar couplings
- Hydrogen exchange rates
These data are essential for the determination of the three-dimensional structures of biomolecules, understanding their dynamics, and studying their interactions with other molecules.
Submission and Access[edit | edit source]
Researchers can submit their NMR data to the BMRB through an online submission system. The data are then curated and made publicly available. Users can access the data through the BMRB website, which provides tools for searching, visualizing, and downloading the data.
Collaboration with Other Databases[edit | edit source]
The BMRB works in conjunction with several other databases to enhance the utility of NMR data. These include:
- Protein Data Bank (PDB)
- Nucleic Acid Database (NDB)
- Small Molecule Repository (SMR)
Applications[edit | edit source]
The data stored in the BMRB are used in various applications, including:
