Biorisk
Biorisk refers to the risk associated with biological materials and infectious agents. It encompasses the potential harm that biological agents can cause to humans, animals, plants, or the environment. The concept of biorisk is particularly relevant in the fields of biotechnology, microbiology, medicine, and public health.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Biorisk is defined as the combination of the probability of occurrence of harm and the severity of that harm where the source of harm is a biological agent or situation. It is a multidimensional concept that includes both biosafety and biosecurity.
Biosafety and Biosecurity[edit | edit source]
Biosafety refers to the principles, technologies, practices, and measures implemented to prevent unintentional exposure to biological agents or their accidental release. On the other hand, biosecurity refers to the measures and best practices adopted to prevent the loss, theft, misuse, diversion or intentional release of biological agents and toxins.
Biorisk Management[edit | edit source]
Biorisk management is an integral part of any laboratory or institution dealing with biological materials. It involves the identification and assessment of biorisks, and the implementation of control measures to mitigate these risks. This includes the use of personal protective equipment, proper waste disposal, and the implementation of safety protocols and procedures.
Biorisk Assessment[edit | edit source]
Biorisk assessment is a process used to identify acceptable and unacceptable risks, and to implement measures to reduce the risk to an acceptable level. It involves the identification of biological hazards, the assessment of risks associated with these hazards, and the determination of appropriate ways to manage these risks.
Biorisk in the Context of Public Health[edit | edit source]
In the context of public health, biorisk can refer to the risk of disease outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. This includes risks associated with emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, bioterrorism, and the misuse of biological materials and information.
