BiteStrip

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

The BiteStrip is a revolutionary, disposable, and self-administered home diagnostic tool designed to detect Sleep Bruxism (SB), a medical condition characterized by the involuntary grinding and clenching of teeth during sleep.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Constructed as a miniature sleep electromyography (EMG) monitor, the BiteStrip is a comprehensive system incorporated onto a lightweight plastic film. This innovative design allows for a seamless and non-invasive monitoring experience for the user. Its primary function is to provide accurate indications that correlate effectively with indications derived from professional sleep lab studies.

Components and Functionality[edit | edit source]

The BiteStrip is made up of several integral components:

  • Two pre-gelled EMG electrodes
  • An amplifier
  • Micro-processor-based real-time data acquisition and analysis system
  • Permanent electro-chemical display unit

To use, the device is attached to the user’s cheek. It operates by analyzing the EMG waveforms of the jaw muscles in real-time throughout the night. Due to its in-built analytical capabilities, the BiteStrip eliminates the need for a large data memory, as well as the downloading and analysis phases that are typical of conventional sleep recorders.

Once the analysis is complete, the bruxing index (BI) - which represents the number of bruxing events per hour of sleep - is displayed as permanent numbers encoded onto the electro-chemical display for user convenience. This indication allows the device itself to serve as a tangible medical record of the test. Additionally, self-test letters on the device vouch for the technical and clinical validity of the study, though further citations are needed to validate these claims.

Sleep Bruxism (SB) Overview[edit | edit source]

Sleep Bruxism is a significant medical concern that affects a considerable portion of the population. It is often identifiable through the distinct grinding sounds it produces, which can be particularly disturbing for those sharing the living space with the affected individual.

Symptoms and Prevalence[edit | edit source]

  • Tooth wear
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain or dysfunction
  • Chewing difficulties
  • Headaches
  • Daytime fatigue or sleepiness

Recent studies estimate that SB affects 14%-20% of children and approximately 8% of adults. Although these figures provide a general understanding, concrete citations are required for more accurate percentages.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Traditionally, SB diagnosis primarily relies on clinical examinations and the patient's medical history. Yet, no single symptom can conclusively diagnose SB. Before the introduction of tools like the BiteStrip, the only alternative was to refer the patient to a sleep lab for an overnight examination.
