Constructed as a miniature sleep electromyography (EMG) monitor, the BiteStrip is a comprehensive system incorporated onto a lightweight plastic film. The BiteStrip is made up of several integral components:

- Permanent electro-chemical display unit
To use, the device is attached to the user’s cheek. It operates by analyzing the EMG waveforms of the jaw muscles in real-time throughout the night. Due to its in-built analytical capabilities, the BiteStrip eliminates the need for a large data memory, as well as the downloading and analysis phases that are typical of conventional sleep recorders.
Once the analysis is complete, the bruxing index (BI) - which represents the number of bruxing events per hour of sleep - is displayed as permanent numbers encoded onto the electro-chemical display for user convenience. This indication allows the device itself to serve as a tangible medical record of the test. Additionally, self-test letters on the device vouch for the technical and clinical validity of the study, though further citations are needed to validate these claims.
