Blauer Limberger

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Blauer Limberger is a red grape variety used in the production of wine. It is also known as Lemberger or Blaufränkisch. The grape is grown in several regions around the world, including Germany, Austria, United States, and Hungary.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Blauer Limberger are believed to be in Austria, where it is known as Blaufränkisch. The grape was first documented in the 18th century in Austria, but it is thought to have been cultivated for centuries prior. The name "Limberger" comes from the town of Limburg, located in the Baden region of Germany, where the grape was widely grown in the 19th century.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Blauer Limberger is a late-ripening variety, which means it requires a long growing season to fully mature. The grape is highly adaptable and can be grown in a variety of soil types, but it thrives best in deep, loamy soils. It is resistant to many common vine diseases, but is susceptible to botrytis cinerea, a type of fungus that can cause grape rot.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

Blauer Limberger produces wines that are typically full-bodied and high in tannins. The wines often have a deep red color and aromas of dark fruits, such as blackberries and cherries, as well as spicy notes. In Austria and Germany, the grape is often used to produce varietal wines, while in the United States, it is commonly blended with other varieties.

Food Pairing[edit | edit source]

Due to its full-bodied nature and high tannin content, Blauer Limberger pairs well with rich, hearty dishes. It is often served with red meats, game, and strong cheeses.
