Sulfacetamide
(Redirected from Blephamide)
Sulfacetamide is an antibacterial agent that is used in the treatment of eye infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. It is available in various forms such as topical creams, eye drops, and oral tablets.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Sulfacetamide works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. It does this by interfering with the bacteria's ability to synthesize folic acid, a nutrient that the bacteria need to grow and multiply.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Sulfacetamide is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. These include:
- Eye infections: Sulfacetamide eye drops are used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis and trachoma.
- Skin infections: Sulfacetamide cream is used to treat skin infections such as acne and rosacea.
- Urinary tract infections: Sulfacetamide tablets are used to treat urinary tract infections caused by bacteria.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all medications, sulfacetamide can cause side effects. These may include:
- Allergic reactions: Some people may be allergic to sulfacetamide. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
- Nausea and vomiting: These are common side effects of sulfacetamide tablets.
- Eye irritation: This can occur with the use of sulfacetamide eye drops.
Precautions[edit | edit source]
Before using sulfacetamide, it is important to inform your doctor if you have any allergies or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is also important to inform your doctor of any other medications you are taking, as sulfacetamide can interact with other drugs.
