Bodybuilding supplement

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Bodybuilding supplement is a type of dietary supplement used by those involved in bodybuilding, weightlifting, mixed martial arts, and athletics for the purpose of facilitating an increase in lean body mass. The intent is to increase muscle, increase body weight, improve athletic performance, and for some sports, to simultaneously decrease percent body fat so as to create better muscle definition.

Types of Bodybuilding Supplements[edit | edit source]

Protein[edit | edit source]

Protein bodybuilding supplements are commonly consumed by bodybuilders and athletes to help repair and build muscles after workouts. They are available in various forms such as protein bars, shakes, and capsules.

Amino Acids[edit | edit source]

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are crucial for muscle growth and repair. They can be found in protein-rich foods and in supplement form.

Creatine[edit | edit source]

Creatine is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps provide energy to muscles and nerve cells. It's often taken as a supplement to boost muscle mass and improve athletic performance.

Testosterone Boosters[edit | edit source]

Testosterone boosters are supplements that are said to increase the levels of testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, in the body. They are often used by bodybuilders looking to increase muscle mass.

Safety and Regulation[edit | edit source]

The safety and regulation of bodybuilding supplements have been a topic of controversy. Some supplements have been linked to health risks, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate dietary supplements in the same way it regulates medication.
