Boko Haram
Boko Haram
Boko Haram, officially known as Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād, is an extremist Islamic group based in northeastern Nigeria. The group has been active since 2002 and is known for its violent insurgency against the Nigerian government, as well as its attacks on civilians.
History[edit | edit source]
Boko Haram was founded in 2002 by Mohammed Yusuf in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The group initially focused on opposing Western education, which it considered to be corrupt and un-Islamic. The name "Boko Haram" is often translated as "Western education is forbidden."
In 2009, the group launched an uprising against the Nigerian government, which led to a military crackdown and the death of Yusuf. After Yusuf's death, Abubakar Shekau became the leader of Boko Haram and escalated the group's violent activities.
Ideology[edit | edit source]
Boko Haram's ideology is rooted in a strict interpretation of Islam, and the group seeks to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria. It opposes Western education and values, which it believes are corrupting influences on Muslim society.
Activities[edit | edit source]
Boko Haram is known for its brutal attacks on civilians, including bombings, assassinations, and kidnappings. One of the most notorious incidents was the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in 2014, which drew international condemnation and led to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.
The group has also targeted government buildings, military installations, and places of worship. Boko Haram's activities have resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people in Nigeria and neighboring countries.
International Response[edit | edit source]
The international community has condemned Boko Haram's actions and provided support to the Nigerian government in its fight against the group. The United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries have offered military assistance, intelligence sharing, and humanitarian aid.
