Boletus rubroflammeus
Boletus rubroflammeus is a species of mushroom in the genus Boletus. It is commonly known as the red-stemmed bolete. This mushroom is characterized by its bright red stem, which distinguishes it from other species within the genus.
Description[edit | edit source]
Boletus rubroflammeus typically has a cap that ranges in color from reddish-brown to dark brown. The cap can reach sizes of up to 15 centimeters in diameter. The pores on the underside of the cap are initially yellow but turn greenish-yellow with age. The stem is bright red and can grow up to 10 centimeters tall.
Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]
This species is found in North America and is commonly associated with oak and beech forests. It prefers acidic soils and is often found growing in clusters on the forest floor.
Edibility[edit | edit source]
Boletus rubroflammeus is considered edible by some, but caution is advised as it closely resembles other species of boletes that are toxic. Proper identification by an experienced mycologist is recommended before consumption.
Similar Species[edit | edit source]
Similar species to Boletus rubroflammeus include Boletus edulis and Boletus pinophilus. These species share similar characteristics but can be distinguished by differences in cap color and stem morphology.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
Due to its popularity among foragers, the populations of Boletus rubroflammeus may be at risk of overharvesting in some regions. Conservation efforts are important to ensure the sustainability of this species in its natural habitat.
