Brain on Fire is a 2016 biographical drama film directed and written by Gerard Barrett. The film is based on the memoir Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan. It stars Chloë Grace Moretz as Cahalan, with Thomas Mann, Jenny Slate, Tyler Perry, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Richard Armitage in supporting roles.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The film follows the true story of Susannah Cahalan, a journalist for the New York Post, who begins to experience a series of mysterious symptoms, including erratic behavior, seizures, and memory loss. As her condition worsens, she is misdiagnosed with various psychiatric disorders until a neurologist, Dr. Souhel Najjar, discovers that she is suffering from a rare autoimmune disease called anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. The film chronicles her struggle to regain her health and her journey to uncover the truth behind her illness.

Cast[edit | edit source]

Production[edit | edit source]

The film was produced by Charlize Theron's production company, Denver and Delilah Productions, along with Foundation Features and Mister Smith Entertainment. Principal photography began in July 2015 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Release[edit | edit source]

Brain on Fire premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 14, 2016. It was later acquired by Netflix and released on the streaming platform on June 22, 2018.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The film received mixed reviews from critics. While Chloë Grace Moretz's performance was praised, some critics felt that the film did not fully capture the depth of Cahalan's memoir.
