Brett Giroir
Brett Giroir is an American physician-scientist and career officer in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. He has served in a number of leadership roles in the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and was appointed as the Assistant Secretary for Health by President Donald Trump in 2018.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Brett Giroir was born in Marrero, Louisiana. He completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. He then attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his medical training, Giroir joined the faculty of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He served as the Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children's Medical Center Dallas and later became the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
In 2004, Giroir was appointed as the Director of the Defense Sciences Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he led efforts to develop advanced biotechnologies to support the United States Department of Defense.
In 2018, Giroir was appointed by President Donald Trump as the Assistant Secretary for Health in the HHS. In this role, he has overseen public health initiatives, disease prevention, health promotion, and the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Giroir is married and has two children. He is an avid cyclist and enjoys reading in his spare time.
