Brewster County, Texas

Brewster County is the largest county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,232. Its county seat and only city is Alpine. The county is named for Colonel Henry Percy Brewster, a Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas.

Brewster County is located in the western part of Texas, with its northern end reaching into the Chihuahuan Desert. The county is home to three mountain ranges: the Chisos Mountains, the Davis Mountains, and the Santiago Mountains.

As of the 2010 census, there were 9,232 people, 3,616 households, and 2,354 families residing in the county. The population density was 1.5/sq mi (0.6/km^2).

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Brewster County is primarily based on tourism, with the Big Bend National Park and the Big Bend Ranch State Park being major draws.

The county is served by the Alpine Independent School District and Sul Ross State University.

Healthcare in Brewster County is primarily provided by the Big Bend Regional Medical Center located in Alpine. The 25-bed critical access hospital offers a range of services including emergency care, surgical services, and a full range of outpatient services.

In addition to the hospital, there are several healthcare clinics in the county, including the Alpine Women's Health Center, the Brewster County Health Department, and the Alpine Family Medicine Clinic. These clinics provide primary care services, women's health services, and public health services, respectively.

The county also has several pharmacies, including the Alpine Pharmacy and the Porter's Thrifty Pharmacy, which provide prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs to residents.
