Brucepattersonius
Brucepattersonius is a genus of rodent in the family Cricetidae. It was named in honor of the mammalogist Bruce D. Patterson. The genus contains the following species:
- Brucepattersonius griserufescens (Grayish Red Brucepattersonius)
- Brucepattersonius iheringi (Ihering's Brucepattersonius)
- Brucepattersonius misionensis (Misiones Brucepattersonius)
- Brucepattersonius paradisus (Paradise Brucepattersonius)
- Brucepattersonius soricinus (Shrew-like Brucepattersonius)
Description[edit | edit source]
Brucepattersonius species are small rodents, with a head-body length of 10-14 cm and a tail length of 8-12 cm. They have a dense, soft fur, which is dark brown on the back and grayish or reddish on the sides and belly. The tail is uniformly dark, and the feet are white.
Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]
Brucepattersonius species are endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome in southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. They inhabit primary and secondary forests, where they are usually found in the understory and on the forest floor.
Behavior and ecology[edit | edit source]
Brucepattersonius species are nocturnal and solitary. They feed on seeds, fruits, and insects. They are preyed upon by larger mammals, birds of prey, and snakes.
Conservation status[edit | edit source]
Due to their restricted range and ongoing habitat loss, some species of Brucepattersonius are considered endangered or vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
