Brugal

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Brugal is a brand of rum produced in the Dominican Republic. The company was founded in 1888 by Andrés Brugal Montaner, a Spanish immigrant from Catalonia. Today, Brugal is the market-leading rum in the Caribbean, and is now distributed in over 50 countries worldwide.

History[edit | edit source]

Andrés Brugal Montaner founded the company in 1888 after moving to the Dominican Republic from Spain. He had previously worked in Cuba, where he gained experience in the rum industry. The company has remained in the Brugal family for five generations, making it one of the few family-owned rum companies in the Caribbean.

Production[edit | edit source]

Brugal rum is made from molasses, a byproduct of sugar production. The molasses is fermented and then distilled to produce a clear, high-proof spirit. This spirit is then aged in oak barrels, which gives the rum its characteristic color and flavor. The aging process can take anywhere from two to eight years, depending on the specific product.

Brugal produces several different types of rum, including white rum, gold rum, and aged rum. The company also produces a premium product, Brugal 1888, which is double-aged in American oak and Spanish sherry casks.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Brugal rum is highly regarded for its quality and has won numerous awards at international spirits competitions. It is also popular among consumers, particularly in the Dominican Republic where it is the market-leading rum.
