Bumbo
Bumbo is a type of rum-based cocktail that was popular among pirates and sailors during the 17th and 18th centuries. The drink is also known as Bumboo or Bambu, and its recipe typically includes rum, water, sugar, and nutmeg.
History[edit | edit source]
Bumbo was a favorite drink of sailors and pirates in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy. The drink was often used as a means of exchange or reward. For instance, pirate captains would sometimes reward their crew with Bumbo after a successful raid.
The popularity of Bumbo declined in the late 18th century as other rum-based drinks, such as grog and rum punch, became more popular. However, Bumbo has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, particularly in craft cocktail bars.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
The traditional recipe for Bumbo includes rum, water, sugar, and nutmeg. Some variations of the recipe also include cinnamon or cloves. The ingredients are mixed together and served in a small glass.
To prepare Bumbo, one part rum is mixed with two parts water. Sugar and nutmeg are then added to taste. The drink is typically served at room temperature, although it can also be served chilled.
In popular culture[edit | edit source]
Bumbo has been referenced in several works of fiction, particularly those set during the Golden Age of Piracy. For example, the drink is mentioned in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and in the video game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
