Bungie, Inc. is an American video game developer based in Bellevue, Washington. The company was established in May 1991 by Alex Seropian, who later brought in programmer Jason Jones after publishing Jones' game Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete. Bungie is best known for creating the Halo series, which has become one of the most successful and influential franchises in the video game industry.

History[edit | edit source]

Bungie's journey began with the development of games for the Macintosh platform, including the critically acclaimed Pathways into Darkness and the Marathon Trilogy, which were some of the first games to feature real-time graphics and networked multiplayer on the Mac. The success of these titles established Bungie as a major name in gaming.

In 2000, Bungie was acquired by Microsoft and became a part of Microsoft Game Studios (now known as Xbox Game Studios). This acquisition was pivotal for the development of Halo: Combat Evolved, which was a launch title for the Xbox console in 2001. Halo: Combat Evolved was a monumental success, significantly impacting the first-person shooter genre and playing a key role in the success of the Xbox console.

Following the success of the first Halo game, Bungie continued to develop sequels, including Halo 2 and Halo 3, both of which received critical acclaim and commercial success. In 2007, Bungie announced its split from Microsoft, becoming an independent company once again, but continued to develop games for the Halo series until the release of Halo: Reach in 2010.

After parting ways with the Halo franchise, Bungie embarked on a new project, Destiny, in partnership with Activision. Destiny and its sequel, Destiny 2, are sci-fi first-person shooters with a large online multiplayer component, representing a significant evolution of Bungie's game design philosophies. In 2019, Bungie announced the end of its partnership with Activision, regaining full publishing rights to the Destiny franchise.
