Busboys and Poets
Busboys and Poets is a community gathering place that combines a restaurant, bookstore, fair trade market, and performance venue. It was founded in 2005 by Andy Shallal, an Iraqi American artist, activist, and restaurateur. The first location opened in the U Street Corridor of Washington, D.C., an area known for its rich cultural history and vibrant arts scene.
History[edit | edit source]
The name "Busboys and Poets" pays homage to the poet Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel in the 1920s before gaining recognition as a poet. The establishment aims to create a space where art, culture, and politics intentionally collide, fostering a community of creativity and social engagement.
