Andy Shallal

Andy Shallal (born 1955) is an Iraqi-American artist, activist, and entrepreneur. He is best known as the founder of Busboys and Poets, a chain of community gathering places in the Washington, D.C. area that combines a restaurant, bookstore, and performance venue. Shallal is also recognized for his work in social justice, peace activism, and his contributions to the arts.

Andy Shallal was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1955. He moved to the United States with his family in the 1960s. Shallal attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he studied biology and later pursued a career in the medical field before shifting his focus to the arts and activism.

Busboys and Poets[edit | edit source]

In 2005, Shallal opened the first Busboys and Poets location in the U Street Corridor of Washington, D.C. The establishment was named in honor of the poet Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy before gaining recognition as a poet. Busboys and Poets quickly became a popular venue for artists, activists, and community members, offering a space for dialogue, cultural events, and social justice initiatives.

The success of the first location led to the opening of additional Busboys and Poets venues in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including locations in Hyattsville, Maryland, Shirlington, Virginia, and Takoma Park, Maryland.

Shallal is a prominent figure in the peace and social justice movements. He has been involved in various initiatives, including anti-war protests, advocacy for immigrant rights, and efforts to address racial and economic inequality. Shallal has also been a vocal critic of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
