CEP70 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CEP70 gene. This protein is a member of the centrosome associated with proteins that play a critical role in the regulation of cell cycle progression, cell division, and the mitotic spindle organization. The centrosome is a key cellular structure acting as a major microtubule-organizing center, and it is vital for the proper execution of various cellular processes.

Function[edit | edit source]

CEP70 is involved in the formation and function of the centrosome during the cell cycle. It is believed to participate in the stabilization and assembly of the microtubule network, which is essential for accurate chromosome segregation during cell division. By influencing the integrity of the centrosome and microtubules, CEP70 plays a crucial role in maintaining genomic stability and preventing aneuploidy, a condition that can lead to various diseases, including cancer.

Gene[edit | edit source]

The CEP70 gene is located on human chromosome 3, specifically at 3q22.1. This gene spans a significant length of DNA and consists of multiple exons that are transcribed into mRNA, which is then translated into the CEP70 protein. The regulation of CEP70 expression is controlled by various transcription factors and signaling pathways that respond to cellular needs during the cell cycle.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Alterations in the expression or function of CEP70 have been implicated in a variety of human diseases. Given its role in ensuring proper cell division and genomic stability, mutations or dysregulation of the CEP70 gene can contribute to the development of cancer. Research has shown that overexpression of CEP70 may be associated with certain types of cancer, where it can affect tumor growth, progression, and response to therapy. Additionally, due to its involvement in microtubule organization, CEP70 is a potential target for cancer treatment, with studies exploring the effects of modulating its activity on cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Interaction[edit | edit source]

CEP70 interacts with several other proteins and components of the centrosome, including γ-tubulin, which is critical for microtubule nucleation and spindle formation. It also interacts with other centrosomal proteins that contribute to centrosome cohesion and duplication. These interactions are essential for the proper functioning of the centrosome and for ensuring accurate cell division.
