Transcription factors

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Transcription factors are proteins encoded by regulatory genes that function by influencing the rate of transcription.

Mechanism of action[edit | edit source]

Transcription factors are specific proteins that influence the rate of transcription of genetic information from DNA to messenger RNA, by binding to a specific DNA sequence.

Gene regulation via transcription factors[edit | edit source]

Gene regulation can occur at any point during gene expression. However, it most commonly occurs at the level of transcription.

Environmental influence[edit | edit source]

  • When signals from the environment or from other cells activate proteins called transcription factors.
  • These proteins are called transcription factors which bind to regulatory regions of a gene.
  • This process in turn can increase or decrease the level of transcription.
  • Transcription factors control the amount of protein made by a gene.
