COMLEX

COMLEX-USA (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States) is a series of three osteopathic medical licensing examinations overseen by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME). The exams are accepted by all osteopathic medical schools and are also accepted by some allopathic medical schools in place of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

Overview

COMLEX-USA is designed to assess the osteopathic medical knowledge and clinical skills considered essential for osteopathic generalist physicians to practice medicine without supervision. The exam series is divided into three levels, each of which is intended to be taken at a different stage of the candidate's medical education.

Levels

Level 1

COMLEX Level 1 is typically taken after the second year of medical school. It assesses the understanding and application of the basic sciences and osteopathic principles to medical knowledge.

Level 2

COMLEX Level 2 is divided into two parts: Cognitive Evaluation (CE) and Performance Evaluation (PE). The CE portion is typically taken during the third year of medical school and assesses the application of medical knowledge in clinical scenarios. The PE portion is a clinical skills exam.

Level 3

COMLEX Level 3 is typically taken during the first year of residency. It focuses on the application of medical knowledge in real-world clinical scenarios.

Scoring

The COMLEX-USA exam series is scored on a scale of 200-800, with a passing score of 400. Scores are reported to candidates and to their osteopathic medical schools.
